Day 22- At Sea – Mar 9, 2018
Another glorious sea day, starting as usual with walking on
the Promenade Deck. Yet another beautiful sunrise.
We decided to skip breakfast this morning (ok, true
confessions, we did get a Portuguese Custard Tart at the Bistro) and eat lunch
in Silk this afternoon.
The lectures today included:
·
“The Art of a Kingdom: Tonga” by Dr. Teri
Sowell. Although she is listed as a
destination lecturer, her lectures seem to be more about the culture. This one was very enjoyable.
·
“Remaking Foreign Policy-Smooth Sailing?” by Dan
Raviv. This was a review of how American
foreign policy has changed since the inauguration of the new President last
year.
·
“Weird and Wonderful Marine Creatures” by Dr Jay
Christofferson. (We did not attend this lecture)
Lunch was in Silk.
The dim sum was great and then we each had an entrée. Bob had a Chinese Chicken Salad, and Julie
had the daily lunch special which was wok fried fish and some vegetable she had
never seen before.
Next up was a movie:
“The Hero” starring Sam Elliot.
This was a Sundance movie about an ailing movie star who comes to terms
with his past and mortality.
We went to the Crystal Cove for pre-dinner drinks and had
the opportunity to chat with Jon Ashton, the Guest Chef onboard. He created a special menu in the Waterside
for this evening and he explained several of the dishes and described the
flavors to us.
We both went with his
menu and had the same items:
Asparagus Salad with Crispy Quinoa & Flaxseed
Vinaigrette, Sweet Corn and Shrimp
Bisque (this had no cream in it, he explained the creaminess comes from the
emulsified corn), and Braised Short Ribs with smothered Onions, Creamy Polenta,
Root Vegetables, and Smoky Jus. An
EXCELLENT meal! For dessert Julie had
Pavlova with Praline Cream and Fresh Berries.
Bob had South Pacific Trifle (Banana Flan, Banana Walnut Bread, Chunky
Monkey Ice Cream).
The Main Show tonight was vocalist Darren Dowler. Currently he is the lead vocalist for Paul
Revere and the Raiders, but has sung with many bands – the Righteous Brothers,
The Lettermen, etc. He is also an actor,
author, director and songwriter. He is a
musical impressionist and sang parts of songs by many different artists.
Today we walked 5.34 miles, 12,711 steps and climbed 71
flights of stairs.
